Virachey Trek and Kayak
4 days: Departing/Returning to Banlung

7 days: Phnom Penh - Kampi - Ratanakiri - Virachey - Phnom Penh

A trekking trip through the remote Virachey National Park in Cambodia's wild Northeast. Visit the dolphins of the Mekong River, swim in a crater lake, sleep in the jungle and in hill tribe villages and kayak down a scenic jungle stream.

Virachey Trek and Kayak Itinerary

Note: The trek alone can be done in 4 days from Banlung.

Day 1 Travel by private taxi to the provincial riverside town of Kratie for lunch, then to the Dolphin pools at Kampi to see the best spot for seeing Irrawaddy Freshwater Dolphins. After a boat trip to see the dolphins, continue on to Ratanakiri.

Day 2 Travel by road from Banlung to Ta Veng (1.5 hours). Travel by boat upriver along the Se San to Phum Yorn Village, an ethnic Brau tribal village on the edge of Virachey National Park (4 hours). Spend the evening in the village and sleep at a village house. Travel time approx. 5.5 hours (road and river).

Day 3 Trek into the park via a route ascending Mt. Meive, offering scenic views and then follow the O'Lapeung Valley to a riverside campsite on the O'Tabok Stream. Total trekking time approx. 6 hours.

Day 4 Return to Phum Yorn Village via the Ho Chi Minh Trail, viewing war relics and wildlife along the way. Enjoy swimming, village hospitality back at the village. Total trekking time approx. 6 hours.

Day 5 Travel down the O'Tabok Stream via inflatable kayak to the confluence with the Se San River. Enjoy lunch in a local village, then continue by river and road to Banlung. Paddling time approx. 5 hours. Travel time approx. 2.5 hours.

Day 6 Enjoy a free morning to explore Banlung and the provincial trade market, then visit Yak Lom Crater Lake in the afternoon for a short jungle walk and swimming.

Day 7 Return to Phnom Penh by private car.
