November 12-21: Mekong Highlights

10 days - 9 nights Phnom Penh - Siem Reap - Stung Treng - Flooded Forests - Dolphins Trail - Kratie - Silk Islands - Phnom Penh

This trip loops through Siem Reap for a visit to the temples, then continues on to Cambodia's Northeast where we will kayak and cycle along the Mekong River through extraordinary scenery including the flooded forests of the Mekong Wetlands. See the rare Mekong River Dolphins and cycle across the Silk Islands as you follow the Mekong from the Laos Border to Phnom Penh.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive at Phnom Penh International Airport. Transfer by taxi to a riverside hotel.

Day 2 Enjoy a full-day tour of Phnom Penh by tuk-tuk, including the Killing Fields Memorial, Toul Selng Genocide Museum, Russian Market and Wat Phnom Temple.

Day 3 Transfer by luxury bus directly to Siem Reap. Stay at a centrally located Siem Reap hotel with swimming pool.

Day 4 Visit the highlights of Angkor by tuk-tuk with a specialist guide, including Angkor Wat, Bayon, overgrown Ta Prohm and the terraces of elephants and the Leper King.

Day 5 Transfer by private car directly to Stung Treng, located at the confluence of the Mekong and Sekong Rivers in North Cambodia. Stay at a nature lodge on the river.

Day 6 Travel North along the Mekong to the village of O Sway near the Lao border and begin a full-day kayaking trip down river through remote flooded forests of Cambodia's amazing Ramsar Wetlands. Many varieties of birds live in these forests. Picnic lunch en route provided. Return to the nature lodge in the evening.

Day 7 Leave Stung Treng by bicycle along a scenic river route, passing through villages and having opportunities to visit a temple, a school and scenic river views until arriving at a deep dolphin pool where you will stop for lunch in the village and watch the rare Mekong River Dolphins. After lunch, transfer by car (or continue cycling) to a primary forest eco-tourism site where you can stay in a village home stay and explore the forest trails, waterfalls, rapids and learn about Cambodian plants, animals and traditional medicines that come from these forests. Cycling: 35 km (or 60 km).

Day 8 Transfer by car to the ancient riverside archeological site of Sambor, then begin cycling along the river route, stopping to visit the 100 Pillars Pagoda and Sambok mountain before arriving in Kratie, a French colonial town, just in time for sunset over the river. Overnight at a comfortable riverside hotel. Cycling: 35 km.

Day 9 Transfer by car to south of Kompong Cham and board a ferry boat to cross to the Silk Islands. Enjoy a picnic and swim at a sandy beach on the tip of the northern-most island, then begin cycling across the island, stopping along the way to visit an island pagoda and local silk weaving communities before crossing to the smaller silk island and then again by ferry to the quiet east bank of the Mekong. Cycle through farms and villages, stopping along the way to explore before arriving at a floating fishing village, where we will board a ferry and cross through the Four Rivers to Phnom Penh.

Day 10 Transfer by taxi to Phnom Penh International Airport.
